Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this into:) but hopefully someone can give me some advice.

Just bought my first flat. SO now away to buy my first sofa. Only problem is the flat is on the first floor. so not sure how or if it will fit in?

Do dfs come and measure ? Can it go thru the window? if so by crane or rope or ? do dfs come fully prepared to deliver to all types of home!?

Any advice from anyone greatly received DFS Sofa ....how to get into first floor flat!? (2)

Unless it is a particularly huge sofa the delivery men should have no trouble getting your sofa in. I believe that it's all about twisting and turning it different ways to get it through doors and around corners. I've been told that as long as the length of your sofa is not longer than the height of your doors it will go in. And even if it is, there are sometimes ways round this.

I live in a first floor flat and the only problem I've had with delivery drivers was with a man from Argos who said that he couldn't take my washer upstairs as he had a bad back and he wasn't insured by Argos if it made it worse! His mate managed to carry it up more or less by himself. DFS won't come and measure your flat.

  • I live in a 3rd floor flat with no lift and ordered sofa from similar company (SCS) and it literally took them 2 minutes to bring it upstairs!! The communal stairs here are wide but my flat has standard doorways. They didn't even come up to look at doorways etc before bringing it up.

My daughter bought a sofa from dfs about three years ago. When they delivered it, they took one look at her stair well and said it would never go up there...They were right.

Her front door is on the ground floor, then stairs straight up to her landing.

DFS gave her a credit note, but she never found any that she liked that would fit.

She had a terrible job getting her money back after that.

We recently bought a new sofa from Multiyork, different company I know, they asked us about the size of dooorways etc, and were very clear in telling us that it was our responsability to make sure that the sofa would fit, we did have the option for the sofa to be made in two halfs if that would have made it easier to fit.
They were very clear that if we hadn't checked about it fitting that was our problem and we would not get a refund becuase of it. The woman in the shop said it was surprising how often it happened that people tried buying very large sofas and didn't think about how they would get them in the home.

I would speak to dfs and ask them for the measurements for door sizes for the sofa you are thinking of buying, and check about them carrying it up the stairs.

    Good Luck

If it is from DFS and will not go in, sit on it for a few hours till it falls to bits then you can put it through the door in pieces.:D

As above, don't buy from DFS, their sofas are cr4p. just search DFS on this forum to see plenty of threads.

I would err on the side of caution and make sure you measure doorways etc and let DFS know. Im sure there is a clause saying they will not be responsible if the sofa does not fit when you have purchased it.

Remember to measure the sofa corner to corner and not simply width and length, if the sofa needs to be turned 90 degrees at any point (from on its side to vertical) the sofa will not go through. If you have any awkward turns or tight head room going up the stairs you may be best getting a sofa that comes in pieces. Please search MSE and read the many DFS complaints threads before you buy.

My sofa came in two pieces. The first piece got in with some difficulty - but the second was a right pain. But as they had the first one in, they didn't want to have to get that half out, and after about 30 mins of swearing, and removing packaging, and unscrewing legs it got in!!
Not sure if it will ever get out though...

DFS wont check the access to your flat that's your responsibility and they only care about taking your money.

If you do go to DFS try and find one with bolt on arms as these are usually a more sturdily constructed frame when you are talking about the more modestly priced sofas, if you do have access problems all you need to do is remove the feet cut away the bottom cloth and unbolt the arms from the inside.

I have worked for DFS or Do*t be Fu***ng Stu*id as we used to call them and I can tell you that some of their working practices and the quality control are absolutely shocking, on the other hand DFS dont manufacture all of their own models so you might be lucky and find one thats been made by another firm.

Ive been an upholsterer for 20 years and can confidently say DFS and SCS are by far the worst ive seen for quality
