Marc Guéhi is set to potentially make his debut for Manchester City against Wolverhampton Wanderers this Saturday, and excitement is building around this new addition. Pep Guardiola, the team's manager, has confirmed that Guéhi is being considered for the lineup, but he must first evaluate the availability of other players ahead of the Premier League match scheduled to kick off at 15:00 (UK) at the Etihad Stadium.
Guéhi finalized his transfer to City earlier this week, signing a contract that spans five and a half years. Although he was unable to participate in the Champions League match against Bodo/Glimt midweek due to eligibility issues, he will be available for selection in the knockout rounds of the European competition.
At just 25 years old, Guéhi may step into a crucial role in defense, especially given the injury woes currently plaguing key defenders such as John Stones, Ruben Dias, and Josko Gvardiol. When asked about Guéhi's readiness to play, Guardiola expressed confidence: "Yes. Really good [to have him]. Considering the absence of central defenders, it’s really good."
The excitement surrounding Guéhi's arrival is palpable; however, Guardiola emphasized that while having Guéhi on board is certainly beneficial, he believes that the solution to the team’s recent struggles cannot rest solely on one player. "It’ll help us because Marc is exceptional," Guardiola remarked. "He is a national team player and a captain for the team that won the FA Cup last season. They had an incredible run under Oliver Glasner, although they’ve faced challenges this season, including injuries."
Despite the positive news regarding Guéhi, Guardiola hinted at a broader issue within the squad, stating, "I have the feeling that this fragility is not just about one player. It would be nice if it were, but that’s not the case. I know what the solution is to alleviate our fragility."
In addition to Guéhi, Bernardo Silva is expected to return to the squad after serving a suspension during the midweek game, providing another boost to the team. Antoine Semenyo is also back and available, having missed the Champions League matchup.
On a less optimistic note, Matheus Nunes and Nico did not make the trip to Norway, with both players dealing with health issues. Guardiola indicated uncertainty regarding Nunes' recovery, stating, "Matheus still has a virus; I don’t know if he’s available—we’ll see what the doctors say this afternoon." As for Nico, Guardiola seemed pessimistic, saying, "I don’t think so."
As anticipation builds for Saturday’s match, it will be fascinating to see how Guéhi integrates into the team dynamics and whether his presence can help steer City back to winning form.
