Get ready for a mind-bending twist! Jason Statham is about to break the fourth wall and play himself in a new action-packed comedy. But here's where it gets controversial... is this a brilliant meta-move or a risky career choice?
According to Deadline, the iconic action star is set to star in a big-budget film directed by David Leitch, known for his work on 'The Fall Guy'. The movie, titled 'Jason Statham Stole My Bike', promises to be an unusual ride, with Statham stepping into the role of a global action superstar - himself!
Plot details are still under wraps, but the project is said to feature Statham in a lifetime role. With a budget exceeding $80 million, the film will showcase multiple large-scale action sequences, a natural fit for Statham's larger-than-life persona. The screenplay is penned by Alison Flierl, known for 'BoJack Horseman', and production is expected to commence in May.
In addition to directing, Leitch will produce alongside Kelly McCormick for 87 North. Statham will also produce through Punch Palace Productions, joined by John Friedberg from Black Bear, and Meredith Berg and Ethan Erwin from Beryllium Entertainment.
While Statham may not be primarily associated with comedy, he has showcased a sharp sense of humor when playing with his tough-guy image. His memorable performance in Paul Feig's 'Spy' hints at a natural fit for this meta-action premise.
But this isn't Statham's only recent venture. He can currently be seen in 'Shelter', an action thriller released just a few weeks ago. The film follows a former British assassin's journey as he protects a young girl from his deadly past. Our reviewer, EJ Tangonan, enjoyed the film, praising its straightforward action-packed nature and engaging characters.
So, will Statham's self-referential role be a hit or a miss? And what does this mean for the future of action-comedy? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments! Is this a brilliant move or a risky career detour?
