Kansas City, prepare for a traffic shake-up! Major highway closures are coming to downtown, causing potential chaos for drivers. But don't worry, it's all for a good cause: progress! Here's the lowdown:
The Missouri Department of Transportation is gearing up for a significant bridge upgrade on Interstate 670, which will impact traffic on consecutive weekends. This project involves replacing the aging Holmes Street bridge, ensuring safer travels for all. Katie Majors, a spokesperson, shared the details in a recent announcement.
Brace yourself for detours and delays! This weekend, the focus is on the eastbound lanes. Starting Friday morning, the McGee Street ramp to eastbound I-670 will be the first to shut down, with more closures following at 7 p.m. This includes various ramps connecting to I-670, affecting both I-35 and U.S. 71/Bruce R. Watkins Drive.
But here's where it gets tricky: eastbound traffic on Interstate 70 will be rerouted to the north side of the downtown loop. This detour is necessary to accommodate the bridge girder installation, a crucial step in the construction process.
Next weekend, the westbound lanes take the spotlight. On Feb. 11, the westbound I-670 ramp to Locust Street will temporarily close, with more closures on Feb. 13, affecting the westbound I-670 split from I-70 and its connection to the I-35/I-670 interchange.
And this is the part most people miss: the Holmes Street bridge replacement isn't just about new infrastructure. It's about safety and longevity. By increasing the bridge's clearance to standard height, the $6.7 million project ensures smoother and safer travels for years to come.
So, Kansas City drivers, stay patient and informed during these closures. The construction team is working hard to enhance your daily commute. And remember, these temporary inconveniences are paving the way for a smoother, safer journey ahead!
