A former boxing champion who once shared the ring with boxing titans like Terence Crawford, Devin Haney, and Gervonta 'Tank' Davis is making a dramatic comeback after a four-year hiatus! But this time, he's not just returning to the sport he knows; he's venturing into a whole new, raw, and unadulterated form of combat.
Many once believed Yuriorkis Gamboa was destined for superstardom in the boxing world. His Olympic Gold Medal and world titles in the featherweight and interim lightweight divisions were testament to his immense talent. However, his highly anticipated showdowns against Crawford, Haney, and Davis didn't quite pan out as many expected, with Gamboa coming up short in each of those significant bouts. His last professional boxing match was in April 2022, ending in a loss to Isaac Cruz.
Now, at 44 years old, this Cuban powerhouse is ready to embrace a different kind of challenge. He's officially making the switch to Bare Knuckle Boxing (BKB), a move that has clearly reignited his competitive fire. Gamboa expressed his excitement, stating, “Bare knuckle boxing is the oldest form of boxing. After winning an Olympic gold medal, world championships in boxing, now I’m focused and excited to become BKB Bare Knuckle World Champion. I’m going to showcase my skills and show why I belong at the very top of this sport.” This ambition speaks volumes about his dedication and belief in his abilities, even after years away from the spotlight.
The founder of BKB, Mike Vasquez, couldn't hide his enthusiasm for Gamboa's arrival. He warmly welcomed the former champion, saying, “It’s an honour to welcome Yurorkis to bare knuckle, and I can’t wait to see his skills and pedigree on display in the trigon. We’ve got some incredible Cuban fighters on our roster, including our heavyweight world champion. This year we’re going to see more and more elite fighters join our global roster of over 200 fighters from over 30 countries.” This suggests that Gamboa isn't just joining a new promotion; he's stepping into a rapidly growing global arena filled with elite talent.
But here's where it gets controversial... Can a seasoned boxer, even one with Gamboa's pedigree, truly adapt to the brutal, no-holds-barred nature of bare knuckle fighting? While the raw power and skill might translate, the lack of gloves means a significantly different impact on both the fighter and the opponent. Is this a wise career move for a fighter in his mid-40s, or a desperate attempt to recapture past glory in a more dangerous arena?
Gamboa's debut in the BKB promotion is expected to be announced very soon, and the boxing and bare-knuckle communities are buzzing with anticipation.
